A white column runs down the left side of the canvas, and if you look at the edges of it you can see what it covers -- the remnants of a tree that didn't work out the way it was intended, branches still visible on either side. On the upper right, dense alembicated script fills a warm golden section: writing so stylized it becomes pattern, legible in form but not in meaning.
Everything in this painting is present and obscured at the same time. The tree is still there. The words are still there. They are simply veiled.
